Frozen boiler condensate pipe: what to do

Your boiler is working perfectly well.

Then the temperature drops below freezing and suddenly it stops.

One surprisingly common cause during very cold weather is a frozen condensate pipe.

The good news is that it can sometimes be relatively simple to put right.

What is a condensate pipe?

Modern condensing boilers produce a small amount of wastewater as part of the way they operate.

That water leaves the boiler through a condensate pipe and runs away into a drain.

Part of that pipe may run outside your home.

And when temperatures fall far enough, the water inside it can freeze.

What happens when the pipe freezes?

If ice blocks the condensate pipe, the boiler can no longer get rid of the water it produces.

As a safety measure, the boiler may then stop working.

You might notice:

  • Your boiler has suddenly stopped

  • There’s no heating or hot water

  • A fault code has appeared on the boiler

  • You can hear gurgling or unusual noises

  • The problem started during particularly cold weather

Different boiler manufacturers use different fault codes, so a code by itself doesn’t necessarily confirm a frozen pipe.

But in freezing conditions, it’s certainly something worth checking.

Where is the condensate pipe?

Look for a plastic pipe running from your boiler towards a drain.

Where part of the pipe runs outside, check whether you can see or feel an obvious frozen section — particularly around bends or exposed areas.

If you’re unsure which pipe you’re looking at, don’t start disconnecting anything.

Can I thaw a frozen condensate pipe myself?

If the pipe is easily accessible and you’re confident you’ve identified the correct one, you can try gently warming the frozen section.

Use warm water — never boiling water.

Gradually pour it over the affected area or use another gentle source of warmth until the ice begins to thaw.

Once the blockage has cleared, your boiler may need to be reset according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

If it doesn’t restart, or you aren’t comfortable doing this yourself, it’s time to get some help.

Can it be prevented?

Often, yes.

If a condensate pipe regularly freezes, it may be particularly exposed to cold weather.

Depending on the installation, there may be ways to reduce the risk, such as improving insulation or looking at how the external section of pipe has been installed.

It’s worth addressing rather than simply thawing the same pipe every winter.

A boiler fault isn’t always a boiler problem

This is another good example of why it helps to look at the whole heating set-up.

Your boiler can stop working because of something happening several metres away from the boiler itself.

The boiler is only one part of the picture.
